QRCS holds health education sessions for schoolchildren

Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) has launched a series of health education sessions for school students. Funded by Roche Holding AG, a Swiss multinational health care company, these sessions are estimated to benefit up to 750 boys and girls. It is a joint undertaking by several QRCS programs, including Patient Support Fund; QRCS School Program; and Training, Research, and Development Center. Under the plan, 25 informative sessions will be held on certain health topics of interest for the students and their families, with an average of 30 participants each. Taught by specialist health educators and nutritionists, the sessions focus on many common diseases, their causes, symptoms, treatment, and prevention through healthy diet and drinking water. Examples of such diseases are kidney diseases, rheumatism, rheumatoid arthritis, and renal failure. Najat Abdul-Rahman Al-Haidous, Head of Social Care in QRCS, welcomed this cooperation with Roche, one of the world’s pharmaceutical manufacturers. It, she asserted, reflected the mutual goal of improving public health and promote health information among the young generations. “A top priority of QRCS is to back the government’s efforts of developing the health care system, as well as to raise awareness among society members about the health risks that may affect their lives,” said Ms. Al-Haidous. “According to research, there is a high correlation between the level of community health culture on the one hand, and economic development and quality of life on the other. That is why we work in harmony with the health authorities, basically the Ministry of Health and Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC)”. She emphasized the private-sector contributions as key to such development and social activities, inspired by the concept of corporate social responsibility (CSR). “We believe that concerted efforts are necessary for upgrading the standard of living across the board for everyone who lives in Qatar, towards the human development objectives of Qatar National Vision 2030,” she concluded. QRCS’s Patient Support Fund is a major social welfare program that seeks to cover the costs of treatment for poor patients, provide socio-psychological support, and hold awareness lectures and public events.
