The Qatar Red Crescent is present in Somalia since 2003, where the Qatar Red Crescent worked on a range of relief programs, mainly in relation to the health and sanitation sectors. The relief programs were executed through partnership agreements with a group of local or international institutions such as the Qatar Red Crescent, the International Committee of the Red Cross or local civil society organizations. These programs include the provision of food assistance, establishment of medical camps for eye surgeries, provision of services for the support and operation of the Anti-Tuberculosis Center in Afgoye, relief bags and medical kits for the hospitals of Mogadishu and Kismayo in cooperation with the World Health Organization.
The Qatar Red Crescent was officially registered in Somalia with a total of 11 employees as a start to launch the projects directly implemented by it. The most important idea ever since was that of changing the quality of intervention with the executed programs being "long-term and multi-sectoral." Three large multi-sectoral programs were executed including sectors of primary health care, water and sanitation, food security, livelihood support and, finally, coordination with local organizations to provide education services while maintaining the strategy of relief interventions in emergency situations.
