9/7/2020

A high-profile delegation from Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) has visited Turkey to hold talks with the Turkish Red Crescent and arrange for the deployment of medical aid to Sudan, under a tripartite agreement signed in June by QRCS and its Turkish and Sudanese counterparts. QRCS’s delegation comprised Ali bin Hassan Al-Hammadi, Secretary-General, and Dr. Fawzi Oussedik, Head of International Relations and IHL. At the Turkish Red Crescent, they met Dr. Ibrahim Altan, Director-General, and Alper Küçük, Deputy Director-General, to discuss further mutual humanitarian cooperation globally. Then, they visited 16 social services centers of the Turkish Red Crescent, which have many capacity-building, socioeconomic empowerment, psychological support, and logistics activities for Syrian refugees in Turkey. Two batches of medical aid were deployed from Ankara to Khartoum, Sudan, to help the country to combat the Coronavirus pandemic. The visit concluded with a tour of the aid stock warehouses, emergency shelter tent production plants, and museum of the Turkish Red Crescent in Ankara. The cargo was delivered at the Khartoum International Airport, containing 12.5 tons of medical equipment and materials, to enable hospitals and quarantine centers to treat COVID-19 patients and ensure protection for the medical professionals engaged in the pandemic response. Upon the arrival of the cargo, there were present Mr. Al-Hammadi; Dr. Oussedik; Naglaa Al-Hajj, Head of International Development at QRCS; Al-Fadel Amer Al-Taher, Chairman of Steering Committee of the Sudanese Red Crescent Society (SRCS); Dr. Afaf Ahmed Yahya, Secretary-General of SRCS; representatives of the Embassy of Qatar in Khartoum; and Director of Office of Prof. Al-Seddik Tawer Kafy, Member of the Sovereignty Council of Sudan and Chairman of Higher Committee for Health Emergencies. In a statement, Mr. Al-Hammadi said the visit was part of the permanent humanitarian cooperation between QRCS and SRCS in various areas of humanitarian action. “We are going not only to deliver the medical aid cargo, but also to distribute it to some beneficiary hospitals in different parts of the country,” he added. Dr. Yahya and Mr. Al-Taher thanked the officials of QRCS and appreciated the partnership between the two National Societies. Within the coming couple of days, the delegation is set to distribute in-kind donations to the Bahari General Hospital and Ibrahim Malek General Hospital in Khartoum. Coordination meetings will be held, and field visits will be made to QRCS’s ongoing humanitarian operations in El-Obeid, the state of North Kurdufan, where more aid would be distributed and a new water and sanitation project would be launched
