February 13th, 2017 ― Doha: Qatar Red Crescent (QRCS) hosted today an international conference on the "9/11 Trials at Guantanamo Bay: A Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law Perspective". Co-organized by QRCS, Al-Jazeera Network, and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), the conference discussed the current conditions in the Guantanamo prison and the military commissions process, with its diverse legal, logistical, humanitarian, and human rights challenges. The event was attended by a slew of top officials from QRCS, including President, Dr. Mohamed bin Ghanem Al-Ali Al-Maadheed, Secretary-General, Ali Hassan Al-Hammadi, Executive-Director, Youssef Ahmed Al-Hammadi, and Head of International Relations and International Humanitarian Law (IHL), Dr. Fawzi Oussedik. Al-Jazeera was represented by its Acting General Director, Dr. Mostefa Souag, Director of the Human Rights and Public Liberties Centre, Sami Al-Hajj, and Head of OLHR Partnerships, Dr. Hassan Elmogummer. Among the guest speakers were Director of ACLU John Adams Project, Denny LeBoeuf, Protection Coordinator at ICRC Kuwait Regional Delegation, Ralph Wehbe, international senior civilian and military defense attorneys representing clients at Guantanamo Bay, and humanitarian actors providing humanitarian services in Guantanamo. The discussions were attended by representatives of several local and regional organizations, such as Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), Qatar University (QU), Doha Centre for Media Freedom, Education Above All (EAA), the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME), Islamic Dawa Organization, and the Arab Red Crescent and Red Cross Organization (ARCO). Major topics were open for consideration and comments, including the Military Commission Trials on Guantanamo Bay – Eight Years, IHL and What Goes Wrong, Islamophobia & the Guantanamo Military Commissions, and the Work of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) with Families and Detainees: "Restoring Family Links" Program.   In her presentation, Ms. LeBoeuf stated, "The goal of this seminar is to exchange information about the ongoing death penalty trials on Guantanamo. While the topics of 9/11, Guantanamo, and the US torture of prisoners are much discussed, the novel trial procedures of the military commissions are not well understood. Defense attorneys for the accused in the 9/11 trials have investigated and researched the history of their cases and clients in the Gulf states and have depended on the generosity and assistance of experts here". During the event, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between QRCS and Al-Jazeera to deepen cooperation in holding conferences and workshops on various humanitarian and human rights issues, as well as providing first aid training for Al-Jazeera staff, who will also receive psychological rehabilitation to overcome the difficulties of their professional work as reporters in hot zones of the world. "We have been working together for years, and this MoU will help us go further with mutual interests and goals," said Dr. Souag. "We are committed to humanitarian action and promotion of IHL worldwide," Dr. Al-Maadheed remarked. "Humanity cannot live without peace. Peace is only possible with justice. And Justice is only possible with laws that look at people as humans with protected rights".
