April 13th, 2017 ― Doha: Qatar Red Crescent (QRCS) has concluded its 7th Disaster Management Camp (DMC-7) at the Marine Scout Camp, Al-Khor, under the patronage of H.E. the Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani. April 13th, 2017 ― Doha: Qatar Red Crescent (QRCS) has concluded its 7thDisaster Management Camp (DMC-7) at the Marine Scout Camp, Al-Khor, under the patronage of H.E. the Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani. Sponsored by the Social and Sport Contribution Fund (DAAM), the event was attended by 350 trainees from several Arab countries. After 10 days of practical training, the participants conducted a big disaster scenario that killed 3,000 victims, destroyed infrastructure and thousands of houses, and displaced nearly 120,000 people at an area already hosting internally displaced people (IDPs). The drill was meant to evaluate the preparedness and responsiveness of QRCS and other involved organizations. Immediately, QRCS activated its Operations Room, set up a shelter center, distributed 1,500 meals on the first day of disaster. Also, QR 500,000 worth of aid was secured from the Contingency Fund, including water and sanitation services and nonfood items (hygiene kits and blankets). Meanwhile, the disaster response operation was coordinated with the Iraqi Red Crescent Society (IRCS), the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). In his speech, Dr. Mohamed bin Ghanem Al-Ali Al-Maadheed, QRCS President, congratulated the trainees for the successful camp. "Over the past few days, you were in touch with the underlying principles of our humanitarian work. Every one of you has a duty of educating society about all the knowledge that you have gained. Our message is centered around improving the lives of vulnerable people and alleviating their suffering," said Dr. Al-Maadheed. He added, "One day, when you are in the field, you will feel the value of what you have learnt. As in medicine, humanitarian action involves treatment, rehabilitation, and prevention. It is not enough to respond; you need to be proactive and ready for challenges. This is possible only with training and education". Rashid Saad Al-Mohannadi, DMC Manager, stated, "The strong government support added a regional and international dimension to this event. The active participation by National Societies and NGOs helped make it such a distinctive success. We will keep working together towards our common humanitarian goals". DMC-7 was supported by several organizations and authorities, including the Ministry of Interior, the Permanent Committee for Emergency, Qatar Armed Forces (QAF), Lekhwiya, Fazaa, Doha Bank, General Directorate of Endowments, Ooredoo, Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), Civil Defense, Qatar Scout & Guide Association, Doha Golf Club, Community Police, and Al-Khor Sports Club.
