Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) continued to conduct its community awareness program 'QRCS School Program' in schools of the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, as a significant development initiative to form groups of schoolchildren that serve their society and promote the culture of charitable work and volunteerism, thus creating a new responsible, well-educated, and up-to-date generation. Under QRCS School Program Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) continued to conduct its community awareness program 'QRCS School Program' in schools of the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, as a significant development initiative to form groups of schoolchildren that serve their society and promote the culture of charitable work and volunteerism, thus creating a new responsible, well-educated, and up-to-date generation. The overall objectives of the program are to spread the values and principles of humanitarian action, to enhance community awareness and promote social responsibility, to identify the attitude of students and harness their talents, to develop the spirit of innovation and creativity, and to introduce QRCS and its mission and different activities. Implemented in coordination with the beneficiary schools, the program covers QRCS's main fields of action: social program, health program, safe school program, international humanitarian law program, and voluntary program. Under the slogan of "Safe Conduct.. Lower Risks.. Effective Response", QRCS is preparing to launch the 5th phase of the Safe School program for the academic year 2016-2017, with plans to expand its scope to cover 35 schools nationwide, through a network of 30 well-trained volunteers. Since its inception in May 2013, the program's four phases achieved exceptional success, as shown in the following charts: During the last semester, the program covered 34 schools, as follows: 17 primary, 9 preparatory, 3 secondary, 3 modal, 1 foreign community, and 1 special). As such, the total schools that benefited the program amounted to 66 (40,416 students). Also, the program distributed 35,000 copies of the Prepared Child booklet, 2,170 copies of the Psychological Support Handbook, and 2,170 copies of the First Aid Handbook. Funded and implemented by QRCS in coordination with the managements of host schools, the program is conducted every Sunday at a different school, applying an all-day theoretical and practical training scheme with two breaks. By the end of the day, a simulated evacuation scenario is implemented by all students, teachers, and administrative staff, who assemble at the predefined assembly points, under the supervision of QRCS Risk Reduction Team members. The program syllabus also covers meaningful topics in relation to the safety and security of society members. Moreover, it raises awareness of the importance of environment protection among schoolchildren, teachers, administrative staff, bus supervisors, and even parents (through the students themselves), urging them to adopt safe behavior as a lifestyle and feel a sense of responsibility for themselves and for others. The program employs a progressive strategy that targets Qatar educational institutions to utilize schooling as a way of community education and creation of dynamic and broad-minded personalities, rather than a rigid, backward instructional system limited to theoretical textbooks that spread passiveness and inaction among students.
